Have you heard? BlackBerry has come back to life. Ok, maybe I am getting ahead of myself here but the company formerly known as RIM has released a new operating system that many believe will be the company’s last shot at mobile relevancy. How does it stack up? Well, not too badly at all, actually.

BlackBerry 10 is a modern OS that can most definitely stand up to the bullies from Cupertino and Mountain View. The first device, the Z10 is a very impressive effort from the Canadian company and while the ecosystem is still lacking, the phone and platform are continuing to impress.

So what is so impressive about BlackBerry 10 and the Z10 in particular? Thought you’d never ask.

5 The Hub

This point is somewhat controversial. While the notifications on BlackBerry 10 in general, are somewhat lacking in my opinion, the Hub itself is actually really cool once you get a hang of it. Choose which services you want to be notified about: Email, Facebook, Twitter, etc. and boom, it’s all there in a sleek and super zippy interface. It is somewhat comparable to a Unified Inbox but more robust. Some find it overwhelming but if personalized right, the Hub can become your productivity’s best friend.

4 Video BBM

Yes, there is video on GTalk (Android) and FaceTime (iOS) but you have not experienced mobile video conferencing until you have experienced video BBM on the Z10. The second I unboxed this bad boy, I called a friend over at BlackBerry to try it out and was truly amazed at the quality of the video and audio. And this is coming from someone who uses FaceTime every day on the iPhone 5.

3 Multitasking

iPhone users, I don’t know how to tell you this, but your phone does not really multitask (with the exception of some VoIP apps that are really running in the background). The multitasking on the Z10 is unparalleled by any smartphone I have ever used and I have used quite a few. Apps are truly running in the background and you can access them easily with one swipe up and a tap.

2 Time Shift

This is by far the most impressive feature I have seen in any smartphone camera. You snap a photo and the Z10 takes a few shots from before and after you pressed the button. You are then able to choose from a few frames and decide which is best. This of course solves the well known blinking/making a weird face problem we all know so well—awesome feature.

1 Gestures

This might take a few minutes to get used to, but BlackBerry has done the unimaginable. It has killed the Home button. No more need for any buttons as the Z10 works 100% based on gestures. Swipe up to exit an app and leave it running in the background, swipe right to view your messages and up and right to take a peek at what messages have come in since you last checked. The gestures are fast and responsive, which creates an overall superior mobile computing experience.
